Joseph Robert Sills was born on May 4, 1942 in Brownsville, Tennessee to Joe Wallace Sills and Cordelia “Peggy” Sills. The son of a brick layer, he spent his childhood learning his father’s trade, fishing and exploring the fields and forests of Haywood County with his horse, Lady. He played a trumpet out of poverty and into history. Though Joe could not read sheet music until college, his natural ability and perfect pitch earned a band scholarship to Memphis State University. There, he traveled the country as a member of the “Mighty Sound of the South,” becoming one of the first people to ever play in a pep band inside Madison Square Garden. On weekends, he shared his horn with the artists of Stax Records and shared his soul with the waters of West Tennessee. Joe went on to earn a masters in music education from Memphis State University en route to an unrivaled career as a high school band director. His bands at Bolivar Central High School, Murray High School (Ky), Ripley High School, Haywood High School and Dyersburg High School captured nine championships at the prestigious Mid-South Invitational, now the Bandmaster’s Championship hosted by The University of Memphis. His 1977 band at Murray High School won the Marching Bands of America Grand National Championship. Joe’s prowess as a band director was only rivaled by his skill as a fisherman. Over the course of 78 years, he captured more tournament victories and angler of the year awards from bass clubs in Kentucky and Tennessee than can ever be counted. He established the Haywood County Jr. B.A.S.S Club and served as Tennessee Youth Director for the sport’s preeminent organization, B.A.S.S, helping to guide one young Haywood County angler to two national championships of his own. His regular columns in the Mid-South Hunting & Fishing News and Brownsville Press encouraged readers to explore the outdoors in their own backyards. He served as the marketing director for the Mid-South Hunting & Fishing News for the past 23 years. Joe was a man of devout, Christian faith who was especially fond of his home church, Brownsville Baptist Church, and his last stop in music, Toone Baptist Church. There, he served as a music director in the service of God. Joseph Robert Sills leaves a legacy of music, faith and appreciation for the outdoors that transcends generations. He was preceded in death his brother, Timothy Rains Sills; his father, Joseph Wallace Sills his mother, Cordelia “Peggy” Rains Sills, and his beloved horse, Lady. He is survived by his wife Susan Speake Sills, his four sons, John Christopher Morey and wife Kelley; Evan Wallace Morey; Cameron Speake Morey and wife Rebecca; and Joseph Lawrence Sills, along with 11 grandchildren, two nephews and two great nieces—nearly all of whom can play an instrument and catch a fish. Graveside Funeral Services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, January 23 at Oakwood Cemetery in Brownsville, Tennessee with Bro. Sammy Tillman and Bro. Anthony Vaughan officiating. An honorary band comprised of former students, family members and alumni will play music preselected by the former director. Social distancing and face coverings are required. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested memorials to Christ Episcopal Church, 140 N. Washington St., Brownsville, TN 38012 or Toone Baptist Church, 20 Keller St., Toone, TN 38381. All arrangements and services are under the direction of the Lea & Simmons Funeral Home in Brownsville, TN.

My Tribute Gift Foundation makes this online charitable giving portal web page MyTributeGift.org (the “Website”) available to you subject to your acceptance of and compliance with these terms of use (the “Terms of Use”). An official tax receipt for your donation will be issued by My Tribute Gift Foundation. Donations are sent out to charities at the end of each month for all donations received in that previous month. So a donation made on the first day of the month would be sent at the same time as one made on last day. Payments would be sent either by paper check or direct deposit. Please note that the there is 3% + 35¢/transaction fee for credit card processing, My Tribute Gift Foundation collects a 5% administrative fee. These fees help fund the cost of processing all donations, issuing tax receipts, and sending all appropriate information to the selected charity. These fees are assumed by your selected charity, but you will receive a receipt for the full amount of your donation. There are NO additional costs the charity has to endure to participate and accept donations through MyTributeGift.org. According to the American Institute for Philanthropy (charitywatch.org) a charitable organization is considered “Good” if they are spending less than 30% on administration and fundraising costs. My Tribute Gift Foundation helps reduce those administrative costs for charities and allows donors to contribute to lasting memorials for their loved ones.
When donating online, if the donation form has an option to add a tip, there is no convenience fee. The tip is optional and can be adjusted before you submit your donation. The amount of the tip will be displayed to you before you confirm the charge to your payment card. Tips are in addition to the donation amount, so they do not affect the amount that goes to the charitable organization. Under IRS and CRA rules, tips are not tax deductible to the donor.
You warrant and represent that all information and materials you provide to My Tribute Gift Foundation, through the Website or otherwise, are accurate and truthful and do not violate third party rights. Indemnity. YOU AGREE TO INDEMNIFY AND HOLD HARMLESS THE FOUNDATION PARTIES FROM AND AGAINST ANY AND ALL CLAIMS, DEMANDS, ACTIONS, SUITS AND PROCEEDINGS BROUGHT BY YOU OR ANY THIRD PARTY (COLLECTIVELY "CLAIMS") ARISING OUT OF YOUR USE OF THIS SITE IN BREACH OF THESE TERMS OF USE OR THE INFRINGEMENT BY YOU OF ANY INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY RIGHTS OF ANY PERSON OR ENTITY, INCLUDING ALL LOSSES, LIABILITIES, DAMAGES, COSTS AND EXPENSES (INCLUDING ALL LEGAL FEES) ARISING FROM SUCH CLAIMS.
If in any part of these Terms of Use is held, by a court of competent jurisdiction, to be invalid or unenforceable, such part of these Terms of Use shall be eliminated to the extent permitted in that jurisdiction, for purposes of that jurisdiction, and the remaining Terms of Use shall otherwise remain in full force and effect.
These Terms of Use and your use of the Website are governed by the laws of the Province of Ontario and all federal laws of Canada applicable therein. The courts of the Province of Ontario shall have exclusive jurisdiction over any dispute arising out of these Terms of Use or your use of the Website.
These Terms of Use constitute the entire agreement between you and My Tribute Gift Foundation with respect to the Website, except as we may explicitly agree otherwise in writing.. No delay or failure to exercise any right with respect to these Terms of Use shall be construed as a waiver by My Tribute Gift Foundation.
As a donor, you are responsible for researching the charity, understanding how your money will be used, and understanding the tax implications of your donation. We will email you a receipt, but the deductibility of your donation depends on your individual tax situation. We are not financial, tax, or legal experts. Please do not rely on our information to make decisions about your finances, taxes or legal matters. Consult a qualified professional in your jurisdiction.
Participating organizations have chosen to actively participate in the “Sponsor Program” to be represented in the Sponsor Charity array in an effort to increase their exposure and the opportunity for more memorial donations to be made to their organization. A rate structure is agreed upon and assessed on each donation processed through that program according to each organization’s individual agreement. Giving through that program has helped many organizations realize a drastic and significant increase in net donations.
If a donation form has a line item of Convenience Fee. The Convenience fee is displayed to you prior to approving the charge to your payment card. The convenience fee is in addition to the donation amount, so they do not affect the amount reaching the charitable organization. For example, a $100 donation becomes a $101.50 transaction. The convenience fee is directed immediately to a for-profit service provider. According to IRS and CRA rules the tax deductible receipt will therefore only be issued for the subtotal amount.
My Tribute Gift Foundation seeks to distribute all funds to organizations provided they have maintained active 501c3 certification in the United States or registered charity status in Canada. MTG relies on the beneficiary organizations to maintain and keep up to date contact information on file with the IRS or CRA respectively. This must be done in order for My Tribute Gift Foundation to exercise care and reasonable efforts to distribute payment promptly, without undue cost and burden to the foundation. In the event that a payment has not been deposited 12 months from issuance, the foundation reserves the right to utilize those funds in its mission to the foundation.
My Tribute Gift Foundation reserves the right to modify, change, discontinue and suspend these Terms of Use, the Website, and/or any services offered through the Website, in whole or in part, at any time, without prior notice to you. Your continued access or use of the Website after modifications to these Terms of Use have been posted on the Website shall indicate your acceptance of and agreement to be bound by these Terms of Use as modified. It is your responsibility to review these Terms of Use regularly.
