Richard (Dick) Gilliam Carraway, Sr., was born April 27, 1925, to Carl Alvin and Mamie Carlton Carraway in Brownsville, Tennessee. He passed away peacefully at the age of 95 on January 5, 2021, joining his wife of 71 years, Marian Laster Carraway and his daughter, Linda Carraway Bradshaw. During WWII, Dick served in the Marines as an airplane mechanic in Hawaii. Upon returning from his service in the military, he was employed by Southwest Tennessee Electric Membership Corporation, where he worked for 43 years and retired as the Brownsville Area Manager. Dick was a faithful member of Brownsville Baptist Church. Hunting, fishing, and golf were some of his many interests. He loved joining the guys at their camphouse for fish fries and social gatherings. He is survived by his son, Richard (Dicky) Gilliam Carraway, Jr. (Betty) of Dyersburg and three grandsons, Robert Carraway of Cincinnati, OH, Brad Carraway (Julie) of Dripping Springs, TX, and Bill Bradshaw (Christie) of Brownsville. He also leaves two sisters, Lell Walker Sullivan (97) of Brownsville and Lula Frances Morgan (93) of Kokomo, IN. His nine adoring great-grandchildren, Hannah, Chloe, Patrick, Marshall, Graham, Bella Grace, and Anna Claire Carraway and Lily and Emma Bradshaw, will miss him as well. In addition to his wife, daughter, and parents, he was preceded in death by three brothers, Alvin, Carl, and Jimmy Carraway and one sister, Willie Jo Smith. The family wishes to thank all of the staff at Sugar Creek Senior Living for their loving care of Mr. Carraway these past months. Due to health and safety concerns, the family chooses to have a memorial service later in the year. They request that memorials be directed to Brownsville Baptist Church, 5 N. Wilson Avenue, Brownsville, TN 38012, or any charity of your choice. All services and arrangements are under the direction of the Lea & Simmons Funeral Home in Brownsville, TN.
