Obituary of Herbert Hays

Herbert G. Hays age 93 years passed away on Thursday June 23, 2011 in the Cypress-Fairbanks Medical Center Hospital, Cypress, Texas at 4:25 pm. Services will be Wednesday, June 29, 2011 at 10:00 AM in the Lea & Simmons Chapel with Rev. Barry Presley officiating. Visitation will be from 9:00AM - 10:00 AM. Burial will follow at the Brownsville Memorial Gardens. Mr. Herbert was born in Alamo, Tennessee on September 17, 1917 to his parents Lonnie and Maude Hays. While in CCC camp he met and married his sweetheart Corrine Brown of Tracy City Tennessee. They were married on June 25, 1938. During WWII he served in the 1387th Medical Detachment until his discharge in April 1946. He was a member of the Woodmen of the World and the Brownsville Lion's Club. He was also a longtime member of Brownsville Baptist Church and Fellowship Baptist Church. He lived in Brownsville from 1947 until July 2006. Then he moved to Cypress, Texas to live with his son. While in Brownsville, he worked as an independent wholesaler for many years. Later, he became a "fixture" at Banks Railroad Salvage. He believed in treating his customers the way he wanted to be treated. Mr. Herbert is survived by his son: Col Herbert M. Hays (ret) wife Wanda, Cypress, TX; Three Grandchildren Scott Cannon (Deena), Lewisville, TX; Grant Cannon (Michelle), Kalamazoo, MI; Valerie Hutchinson (Greg), Highland Village, TX; Two step-grandchildren Christie Bartlett (Neill), Jackson, TN; Rachel Lewis (Lane), Brownsville, TN; Ten great-grandchildren Ashton, Max, Zack, Garrett, Monica, Miranda, Marcus, Macy, Mitchell and Marlie. Five step-great-grandchildren Sam, Danielle, Morgan, Hannah, and Ella; one step-GG grandson Caden, and a grandson-in-law: Rocky Femia and his daughter, Ashley. One has to mention his two favorite "kiddos", Lucas (lap buddy) and Noele, (Miniature Schnauzers from the Schnauzer Rescue). Mr. Herbert is preceded in death by his beloved wife of 63 years Corrine Brown Hays; daughter Martha Ann Cannon Schreur; daughter-in-law Carolyn Adams Hays; granddaughter Michelle Hays Femia. Mr. Herbert was a devoted father, grandfather and friend. He brought smiles to every face with his dry wit, humor and love for life. Attempts were made to convert him to a Texan, but he remained a true Tennessean to the end.
