Sorry , I just read about it in Bassmaster Magazine , Joe was a GREAT Man and always on the up & up ! I was in the Haywood County Bass Club with him, that he founded, although I never got to fish with him, I have often wished in the passing of years I would have made that phone call ! Joe, I know for a fact that you are with The Lord Jesus Christ and are catching 10lb'ers every cast! You will be greatly missed by all ! Mike Hunt

The last time I saw Joe was one of the last Sundays before his illness when he directed us in one of last songs at Toone Baptist Church. God sent a message through Joe in a song called “Holy Spirit Rain Down”. The song speaks of the comfort of the Holy Spirt that we need surrounding us in these troubling times. Thank you Joe for you timely message and your love of music. We will miss you greatly! May your family find peace and comfort from the strength from our Heavenly Father and His people.

Joe first came to me when I directed the Haywood County bands in the mid-70s, then we worked together at Haywood county in the mid-80s. He was a good friend in many ways and I will mss him and our many band functions and FISHING trips! Rest in peace, Joe. Enjoy that EARLY morning breakfast and keep that lure wet!

Words cannot express the gratitude I feel for Joe Sills (I'm a better person because of his early guidance...I'm sure that many other former students feel the same). He even hired me to work for him when I needed money!!!

It's hard to imagine we lost this man because of a global pandemic! He personally made a big impact on my life even though I was a woodwind! He always believed in me and taught me the value of teamwork, hard work, harder work, and how to win in life. I can't even tell you how he has influenced me decisions over the years and I've never been late to anything. Ever. I don't know how many times I heard, 'When you're early you're on time, and when you're on time, you're late!' I took it to heart. For his family, please accept my heartfelt condolences for your loss and may his wonderful memory be a blessing to you as they are for me.

As much as I love the town, Murray Kentucky, Mr. Joe Sills name should be honored on a street sign, most definitely a bronze statue in the town of Murray Kentucky.
I was asked, why do you love Murray so much. I reply, it's the people, the caring people.
Those people that fall into that description of making a difference in your life.
I was not in the band, I was not a student at Murray High. But, I am friends with those who love and will always love this man.
They stand tall, they are smarter and know the hard work of being a team led for each to be so successful.
Joe and the many band parents like Mrs McConnell "Big Mac" and Mrs. Rice and John and Teckla Farrell, made a difference giving the support for their kids as well as all the kids in the band.
The stories are endless if you are blessed like me, to know one or two that were directed under Joe Sills.
May the town of Murray Kentucky always hold the memories close to their hearts, and stand and support their kids to love the sound of the BAND.

Our deepest sympathies and Prayers to your family. Being under Joe Sills direction from 7tth grade to my Senior Year at Murray High School, he was one of the most influential people in my young life. All the hard work and dedication that Joe taught all of us was very rewarded with many Trophies of excellence. He took us to the Orange Bowl twice, Disney, and the Rose Bowl Game. But, the one event that has helped me through all of my life was our winning as The National Champions...thank you Sir for the Memories that I will always hold dear to my Heart. God Bless you Joe Sills!!! May you rest in Peace!!

Joe had a most profound impact on my life. His influence and leadership standards helped instill a work ethic and pride in me that has inspired me throughout my life. He taught me the importance of teamwork. Joe was tough, but fair. He demanded my best and made me willing to give it. He always gave credit where credit was due. I will always remember him with great admiration and ultimate respect. I will miss my friend.

Joe came into my life during a changing and challenging period of time, the 60s. I was attending a predominantly all white elementary school and when I joined the band, he made me feel welcome and I really needed that as I often felt isolated and alone. Thank you Joe for being a role model to me and for just being a good man. Rest in Peace and play with that heavenly band for all eternity!!!

I am so grateful for the impact of Joe Sills in my life. He made a lasting impression on the lives of thousands of band students through the years. He taught so much more than music, he taught us life lessons. I am thankful that Central High School in Bolivar, TN is part of his legacy that will long be remembered and cherished. What an honor to now work for the funeral home that will handle his services.
Dan Fogelberg said it well in his song, "Leader of the Band"
"The leader of the band is tired and his eyes are growing old,
But his blood runs through my instrument, and his song is in my soul.
My life has been a poor attempt to imitate the man,
I'm just a living legacy to the leader of the band."
You are loved and will be missed!
